30-50 cm of snow could be headed to parts of Manitoba during ‘major snowstorm’

A blast of wintry weather is heading to parts of Manitoba, with some communities expected to get up to 50 centimetres of snow.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued an orange warning, calling for snowfall in several northern communities, including Brochet, Leaf Rapids and Thompson.

According to the weather agency, a major spring storm is expected to bring 30 to 50 centimetres of snow and winds up to 70 km/h.

The storm is expected to begin on Wednesday evening and continue until Saturday.

ECCC warns that driving will likely be dangerous due to reduced visibility and blowing snow. It advises residents to prepare for utility outages, as well as service and transportation disruptions.

Spring storm to bring freezing rain

In central Manitoba, the weather agency has issued a freezing rain warning and winter storm watch.

According to ECCC, the freezing rain is forecasted to begin on Wednesday and continue until Thursday, when it will likely transition to snow.

The weather agency adds that ice build-up is possible as freezing rain may exceed five millimetres.

ECCC warns that travel may be risky and some routes will likely be impassable.
