TSN’s Darren Dreger is reporting Winnipeg Jets forward Jonathan Toews will hang up his skates after 16 NHL seasons on Friday. On Thursday, the hockey club announced a press conference is happening at Jonathan Toews Sportsplex in St. Vital but didn’t provide further details. “I expect Jonathan Toews will officially announce his retirement tomorrow,” Dreger wrote on X. “Hand in hand with the [Winnipeg] Jets. What a career.” The St. Vital product led the Chicago Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup championships during his 15-year run with the team. ‘Captain Serious’ was also a key player on two Canadian Olympic gold medal squads in 2010 and 2014. Toews returned to the NHL in 2025-26 after a two-season hiatus due to health-related issues and signed a one-year with his hometown club. The centerman played all 82 games for the Jets this past season, racking up 11 goals and 18 assists. He was named a finalist for the NHL’s Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually “to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” During his end-of-season availability in April, Toews was noncommittal on his playing future but hoped to stay in Winnipeg. “One hundred per cent if they’ll have me,” Toews told reporters. “I loved being part of this locker room this year. That being said, if I decide to play next year, I’d love to be part of this group again, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” CTV News Winnipeg will stream the Winnipeg Jets news conference at 11 am.
