High-risk accused status revoked for Manitoba man who killed parents, attacked nurse

A Manitoba nurse who was found not criminally responsible for killing his parents and attacking another nurse in a Winnipeg hospital had his high-risk accused status revoked by a judge on Tuesday.

Justice Ken Champagne revoked the status for Trevor Farley during a hearing in the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench.

Despite the revocation, Champagne ruled Farley remains a threat to public safety and is to remain detained in custody in hospital.

Those designated high-risk may be required to stay in mental health hospitals longer, require more security and may also only be permitted to leave a facility for supervised appointments.

Farley, who worked as a nurse at Seven Oaks Hospital, fatally stabbed his mother and father multiple times on Oct. 27, 2021, before attacking Candyce Szkwarek at the hospital, seriously injuring her.

He was initially charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother, second-degree murder in his father’s death and attempted murder for the attack on Szkwarek. In 2023, Farley was deemed not criminally responsible due to mental illness.

Farley has been held in a hospital in Selkirk and has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
