A judge will soon decide who can participate in an inquest into the death of an inmate at Stony Mountain Institution. Dennis Lee Mutz was found unresponsive in his locked cell of the federal prison and pronounced dead Aug. 22, 2022. At the time, the 38-year-old man’s death was ruled accidental – missed drug toxicity. An inquest was ordered by Manitoba’s chief medical examiner in September. It’s happening Jan. 21, 2026, at 2 p.m. in courtroom 402 at the Manitoba Law Courts on York Avenue. “Individuals and groups may make an application to be granted standing and participate in the inquest,” a media release from the province said. Those interested are being asked to contact the inquest’s counsel, Kerry UnRuh, at 204-949-1710 or kunruh@dfsku.com by Jan. 9, 2026.
