All Manitoba First Nations Police officers now wearing body cameras

The Manitoba First Nation Police Service and Manitoba RCMP are now fully equipped with bodycams for all of their officers.

Officers with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) are now all using body cameras.

The service announced Tuesday it has fully deployed the use of Axon body-worn cameras at all of its 12 detachments. It started equipping officers with the cameras last year.

“Body-worn cameras are an important tool that will help us continue building strong, positive relationships with the communities we serve,” said MFNPS Chief Jason Colon in a news release.

The service said the cameras are a “significant step forward in enhancing transparency, accountability, and community trust in policing.”

The MFNPS added officers have been trained to make sure they are using the cameras responsibly and effectively.

“These devices provide an accurate and objective record of interactions between MFNPS officers and community members, strengthening public confidence while supporting officer safety and professionalism,” the release from the service said.

The MFNPS joins the Manitoba RCMP in their use of the body-worn cameras. Mounties confirmed Tuesday that all front-line officers are equipped with the cameras.

This leaves the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) as an outlier in the province when it comes to this technology.

Winnipeg police previously told CTV News in September 2025 the police force does not have any body-worn cameras due to the cost, which would include expenses for storage and cataloguing.

However, WPS Chief Gene Bowers has previously said a pilot project to bring the technology to Winnipeg officers could happen in early 2026.
