Another candidate has entered the race to become Winnipeg’s next mayor. Tracey Drexler is the 13th person to register as a mayoral candidate for the Oct. 28 election. In a statement, Drexler said she’s running for mayor because she wants to make a difference in the community. She added she was reluctant at first, as she knows how tough politics can be, especially for women, but wants to bring a new point of view to city hall. “I’m a big believer in democracy and transparency,” the statement said. “I strongly believe every councillor should be free to express their ideas and have a vote on things that impact the community they serve such as the budget.” Drexler said her top priorities as mayor would be community safety, the drug addiction epidemic and the crimes that are tied to these issues. She also said she would tackle homelessness as she strongly feels “nobody should be sleeping on the streets.” “Even if I’m not elected I hope my campaign gets whoever is elected working with community partners to tackle these issues,” she said. Drexler joins a growing list of mayoral candidates who have registered ahead of the Sept. 22 deadline. Other candidates who have already filed their papers are incumbent Scott Gillingham, Kevin Klein, Chris Clacio, Mike Vogiatzakis, Umar Hayat, Mazher Alam, Don Woodstock, Joshua Pagdato, Johnny Calderón, Noah Redden, Zachary Uminski and Brad Gross. The 2026 municipal election takes place on Oct. 28.
