Warning from OPP after series of thefts from unlocked vehicles in Essex County

Essex County OPP officers are reminding the public about theft prevention and property security after another round of preventable thefts took place over the last week.

Police say items were stolen from unlocked vehicles in the county.

Theft Prevention Tips:

Home Security Improvements

-Lock All Entries: Use quality deadbolts on all exterior doors, including the door between the house and garage.

-Secure Sliding Doors/Windows: Place a wooden stick or metal bar in the track of sliding doors and windows to prevent them from being lifted.

-Interior/Exterior Lighting: Use motion-activated lights, and set indoor lights on timers to create a “lived-in” appearance when away.

-Landscaping and Visibility: Trim hedges and trees below window level to eliminate hiding spots.

-Upgrade Entry Points: Ensure doors are solid core wood or metal.

-Secure Garages and Sheds: Keep garage doors closed and locked.

-Never leave ladders or tools outside that could help a thief.

When Away from Home:

-Look Occupied: Arrange for snow removal, lawn cutting, and mail collection to avoid signs of abandonment.

-Do Not Advertise on Social Media: Avoid posting vacation details until you return.

-Secure Secondary Homes/Cottages: Ensure valuables are removed and windows/doors are secured during the off-season.

Vehicle Security

-Lock It Up: Never leave valuables in your car, and always lock doors and roll up your windows, even in your driveway.

-Never Leave Keys: Store spare keys securely; never leave them in the car.

-Keep your registration and proof of insurance in your wallet or purse, not in the glove box

-At night or during extended parking periods, always park in a well-lit area.
