Essex County OPP are confirming a chemical spill in Leamington on Monday. Essex County OPP, along with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), Ministry of Environment (MOE), Leamington Fire Services and the Fire and Spills Action Center responded to the incident around 3 p.m. on Monday. Highway 77 was closed between Mersea Road 6 and Mersea Road 8; and Mersea Road 7 was closed between County Road 31 (Albuna Townline) and Mersea Road 12, but have since reopened. Police confirmed nitric acid leaked from a crack formed in a tanker truck carrying the chemical.
