Windsor police are informing the public about red flag to watch out for if you’re hiring a contractor this spring.

Police say it’s important to protect yourself before committing to a project.

Tips from police:

• Do your homework. Check reviews, ask for references, and speak to people you trust who have used the company.
• Don’t pay in cash, ever. Use traceable methods like an e-transfer or cheque.
• Get everything in writing. Ask for detailed estimates, clear cost breakdowns, and receipts for payments.
• If something feels off, trust your instincts.
