Caldwell First Nation releases statement of solidarity and support for those impacted by wildfires

The Caldwell First Nation has released a statement of solidarity and support for First Nations impacted by the wildfires.

It said Chief Nikki van Oirschot spoke with Chief Helen Paavola of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation, which is a community affected by the fires.

Paavola said her community has lost everything, but she is grateful every member was safely evacuated to hotels until they can find longer term accommodations.

“Our thoughts are with every individual who has been forced to leave their home, every family facing uncertainty, and every community working tirelessly to protect their people, lands, and cultural heritage,” the statement read.

“We also express our deepest gratitude to the firefighters, emergency responders, community volunteers, and leadership who continue to serve with courage and compassion during these challenging times.”

Caldwell First Nation said it mourns with the Nations dealing with devastating losses and immense challenges of evacuating and living away from home.

“As First Nations, our connection to one another extends beyond geography,” the statement continued.

“When one Nation is affected, we all share a responsibility to stand together. Caldwell First Nation believes in Nation-to-Nation relationships grounded in respect, compassion, and reciprocity. During times of hardship, these values remind us that our greatest strength lies in supporting one another.”

The Anishinabek Nation 7th Generation Charity is accepting donations to help those affected.
