Victoria preparing for new e-bike program aimed at expanding mobility options

A new shared e-bike system is set to arrive in Victoria later this summer, with city officials framing it as part of a broader shift toward more accessible and flexible ways to move through the city.

The program, operated by Lime, will introduce a fleet of electric bikes designed to support short trips and make cycling more manageable for a wider range of people, including those who might not otherwise consider biking part of their daily commute.

Instead of the fully dockless approach used in some cities, the system will rely on clearly marked parking areas. City staff say the idea is to bring more structure to shared micromobility while keeping it easy to use.

At the centre of the rollout is accessibility. Officials say the goal is not just to add another transportation option, but to widen who can realistically use it, whether that means older riders, people with physical limitations, or anyone looking for a less demanding way to travel across the city’s hills and corridors.

“Since being selected by the city we have been working to build custom operational plans that will set the program up for success from day one,” said Carling Dick, who handles Canadian government relations for Lime, in a statement.

“We understand that safe riding and proper parking are the foundations of any successful micromobility program and we’ll be monitoring the program’s progress and adjusting in real time in the hopes of making our presence a win for the entire city, including riders and non-riders alike.”

Lime says the bikes themselves have been redesigned with stability and comfort in mind, including features meant to make riding feel more controlled and less physically demanding, particularly over longer distances.

More details on launch timing and exact locations are expected closer to rollout later this summer.
