Bus riders in Greater Victoria can now pay fares with a tap of a debit card, credit card, or mobile wallet as BC Transit rolls out contactless payment across the Victoria Regional Transit System. The new system allows passengers to board by tapping Interac, Visa, Mastercard, or American Express on onboard readers. Mobile wallets, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay, are also accepted. The change is designed to speed up boarding on busy routes across the region, including corridors serving downtown Victoria, the University of Victoria, and the West Shore. The system operates through Umo, which continues to support existing fare products such as reloadable cards and concession fares for eligible riders. Fares charged through tap-to-pay remain the same as cash or Umo adult single-ride rates, with no additional fees. Riders also receive the same benefits, including transfers and daily fare capping where available in the Victoria system. BC Transit is advising riders to use the same card throughout the day so fare caps apply correctly and to ensure each passenger uses their own payment method. “Making transit easier and more accessible is a key to building connected communities throughout British Columbia,” Transportation and Transit Minister Mike Farnworth said in a statement. BC Transit president and CEO Erinn Pinkerton said the rollout reflects how people already pay in their daily lives. “We’re making transit easier to use by introducing contactless payment, allowing you to pay your fare with a simple tap.” The Electronic Fare Collection System Project is funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, with support from federal, provincial, and local governments. The total cost is $24.8 million. Riders who qualify for discounted fares must still use an Umo card, app, or cash to access concession pricing.
