Mounties in Nanaimo say multiple people were injured after a man deliberately drove into other vehicles in a mall parking lot over the weekend. The incident occurred just before 12 p.m. Saturday near the Canadian Tire at North Town Centre Mall, the detachment said in a statement Monday. Police say the suspect was no longer there when they arrived, but they spoke to “several adults who reported injuries sustained when their vehicle was allegedly struck by the suspect vehicle.” In total, five vehicles were struck and the side of the Canadian Tire was damaged. According to Nanaimo RCMP, officers found the suspect vehicle—a grey Toyota Corolla—and the driver in the 4400 block of Wellington Road shortly later. Police say the 44-year-old Victoria man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act “without incident.” “The driver was transported for a physical and mental health assessment,” the statement reads. Officers suspected the driver had been drinking alcohol but he refused a breath sample, leading to a 90-day driving prohibition, according to police. Investigators say they are considering Criminal Code driving charges and asked anyone who was injured or had their vehicle damaged to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
