The Burnaby School District says cybersecurity experts are still investigating an incident that shut down systems in schools across the city last week. The cyber incident was first detected on Sept. 21 and impacted internal network services and phone lines, the latter of which were restored on Monday. The district says it detected “unauthorized activity” within its network, but it has not yet confirmed whether any personal information was accessed. “Determining the nature and scope of the incident is a key focus of the investigation,” School District 41 wrote in an updated statement Monday. The district urged parents, staff and students to be cautious of any suspicious communications or unexpected emails, text messages or phone calls. “We understand that incidents of this nature can be concerning, and we are committed to providing updates as more information becomes available,” the statement reads. “We remain appreciative for the understanding and patience shown by the Burnaby Schools community while we work to restore remaining services as quickly and securely as possible.”
