RCMP on scene of ‘serious incident’ at North Vancouver plaza

Mounties in North Vancouver are investigating a “serious incident” at North Vancouver’s Westview Plaza Monday afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m., a spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP confirmed an investigation is underway and urged the public to avoid the area “until further notice.”

No additional information has been provided.

The plaza is located near the intersection of the Upper Levels Highway and Westview Drive.

Police tape went up around a gas station, some seemingly marking off a blue pickup truck.

Witnesses told CTV News a frightening scene unfolded over the lunch hour, when many people were eating at the restaurants in the shopping centre—including at a McDonald’s where those witnesses said a man pulled a knife.

After the man left the fast-food eatery, surveillance video and witness accounts suggest he was involved in a confrontation with police.

B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office, which is called in for police-involved incidents that result in death or serious harm, has been notified, a statement to CTV News confirmed.
