One man has been taken to hospital after a shooting in South Surrey Tuesday night.
The violence unfolded in a normally quiet condo complex near 151st Street and 33rd Avenue.
Gunshots erupted in the parking lot of the clubhouse in the Harvard Gardens complex around 11:15 p.m. Some neighbours report hearing as many as 20 gunshots.
“I heard like 10 or 12 shots, very fast, very rhythmic shots. And after a couple of minutes, I heard some six or seven more shots,” said Gabriel Celligoi, a neighbour. He called the incident concerning.
“It sounds like an automatic gun or something,” said Celligoi.
When police arrived, they say they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.
“The members immediately rendered aid and Surrey Fire Services and BCEHS attended the scene and treated the man. He was subsequently transported to an area hospital in critical but stable condition,” said Sgt. Tige Pollock of the Surrey Police Service in a news release early Wednesday morning.
Video from the crime scene showed the windshield of a grey SUV under a tarp with many of its windows shattered with what appear to be bullet holes. More than a dozen cones were laid out on the ground below, marking evidence.
The Surrey RCMP’s Gang Enforcement Team found a suspect vehicle not long after.
Police say the suspects attempted to flee, but crashed.
A grey Dodge pickup truck could be seen wrapped around a streetlight near 194th Street and 32nd Avenue.
“RCMP SPOSU SGET members arrested two men with the assistance of Integrated Police Dog Services in the area of the collision,” wrote Pollock.
RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit General Investigations Unit and Serious Crimes Unit were on scene and assisting with the investigation.
Police say two men are currently being held in custody.
“Right now, that’s still being investigated as to what their roles are and what the motives are in the incident,” said Pollock.
Tanya Straza was at a strata council meeting in the clubhouse not long before the shooting. “It’s a bit scary, because we all leave and have to walk back to our respective buildings and to know that it happened. You know, 11:30 isn’t really that late, so it’s pretty shocking,” said Straza.
