Drunk novice driver nabbed after almost ‘side-swiping’ police car, AbbyPD says

A drunk novice driver was pulled off the road after nearly swerving into a police car in B.C.’s Fraser Valley this week, according to authorities.

The Abbotsford Police Department said the incident happened while officers were patrolling Highway 1 on Thursday evening.

“They noticed an SUV playing a spirited game of ‘pick a lane,’” the department said in a social media post. “The vehicle exited at Clearbrook Road and continued northbound, with officers keeping a close eye on the show.”

Authorities said the driver seemed “unfazed” by the officers’ presence, and at one point swerved into their lane, nearly “side-swiping” their vehicle.

After being pulled over, the 25-year-old driver—who only had a Class 7 licence—failed a breathalyzer test, police said. An image shared by the department shows a crushed Coors Light can in the pocket of one of the SUV’s doors.

Novice drivers are subject to a strict zero alcohol or drugs policy while behind the wheel.

The vehicle was impounded and the driver was given a 90-day driving suspension, plus a ticket for violating their licence restrictions, according to police.
