Arson suspected after crews battle another Kamloops, B.C., grass fire

Authorities suspect arson was the cause of a grass fire that erupted in Kamloops, B.C., on Tuesday afternoon – and are working to determine if it’s connected to any other recent fires in the city.

Kamloops RCMP said the blaze broke out near Strathcona Park shortly before 4 p.m., and spread to approximately one hectare before being contained by local firefighters.

“We are treating this incident as suspicious and have identified a person of interest in relation to this fire,” said Cpl. Dana Napier, in a statement.

Napier said the RCMP will be working with Kamloops Fire Rescue to confirm the cause of the fire, and whether it is “related to any other fires in the downtown area.”

Unverified images that were shared with a Kamloops social media account around the time of Tuesday’s fire show a person standing near a grass fire, with the caption: “This douche is lighting a fire across the bridge.”

CTV News has asked Kamloops RCMP whether the detachment is aware of the image, and whether it’s relevant to its investigation. This story will be updated if a response is received.
