Abbotsford police investigating 3 arsons at schools in last week

From April 13: A school in Abbotsford is closed Monday following what police are calling a suspected arson.

Two more school arsons are under investigation in Abbotsford, police announced Saturday.

The latest incidents occurred on Wednesday and Friday, following the initial fire at Bakerview Centre for Learning on Monday, the Abbotsford Police Department said in a news release.

The first fire occurred in the early morning hours of April 13 and prompted the closure of the facility, which is described by the Abbotsford School District as “a secondary school for learners between the ages of 14 and 65.”

The second blaze also occurred at Bakerview. Police said they were called to a portable classroom there around 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

“Damage in this incident was minor, and the fire was later confirmed to be an arson,” the release reads.

Friday’s fire occurred in a portable classroom at Godson Elementary School around 12:30 a.m. and has also been confirmed to be arson, police said.

The two facilities where the arsons have occurred are less than two kilometres apart.

“AbbyPD’s Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation into all three incidents,” the release reads. “These investigations are in the early stages, and additional resources have been deployed. Investigators are examining all available evidence to determine if the incidents are related. There have been no arrests to date.”
