A registered nurse has had her licence suspended for nine days for accessing the medical records of a person who was not in her care, according to the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives. Olga Makarevski agreed to a discipline order from the college on Oct. 7, and a summary of the case was published online last week. According to the documents, Makarevski’s misconduct occurred on Feb. 11, 2024. “On this date, Olga Makarevski accessed the medical records of a person who was not her patient on three occasions and was repeatedly present in the immediate vicinity of where the person’s care team discussed the person’s health,” the summary reads. The summary does not specify where Makarevski was working at the time. Her entry in the college’s online directory does not list a primary employer. According to the directory, Makarevski’s suspension began on Tuesday and will continue through Nov. 11. The college’s investigation committee considered the nurse’s admission of her misconduct, her lack of disciplinary history and the fact that she did not gain any advantage from her behaviour when determining that a nine-day suspension was an appropriate sanction, the summary notes. “The decision maker also considered that the conduct harmed the person whose privacy was breached and the importance of nurses maintaining privacy to ensure public confidence in the integrity of the profession,” the summary concludes.
