Truck crashes into bridge in Liberty Village, no eastbound streetcar service on King

Streetcars have stopped running on a large section of King St. after a truck struck a bridge, and officials say the service suspension could last all day.

Eastbound streetcars aren’t running on a large section of King Street after a truck struck a bridge Wednesday morning--and officials say the service suspension could last all day.

Toronto police said the crash occurred at 8:20 a.m. near King Street West and Atlantic Avenue in the city’s west end.

No structural damage has been reported to the bridge, but streetcar lines have been hit.

Susan Nguyen, a spokesperson for the TTC, told CP24 that the damage to the overhead streetcar power lines is “extensive” and repairs could extend into Thursday morning.

The TTC says shuttle buses are running between Shaw Street and Roncesvalles Avenue to supplement service.

Officials initially said that service was suspended in both directions, but westbound streetcars were seen running shortly before 11:30 a.m.

The cause of the crash is unclear, but police told CP24 that the truck driver remained at the scene. The vehicle has since been removed.

The TTC said it currently has about 15 shuttle busses running along the affected area of King Street and commuters can expect to see a bus roughly every five minutes.

“We will be increasing that number to about 25 busses during the evening rush hour period. So, leave yourself plenty of extra travel time if you’re traveling on that stretch of King this morning,” Nguyen said.
