‘Your visibility is only as good as your worst window’: Not clearing snow off your car could cost you

Failing to properly clear snow and ice from your vehicle could land you a ticket.

Under Saskatchewan’s Traffic Safety Act, drivers must ensure they have a clear front, side and rear view before hitting the road. That includes windows, mirrors and licence plates.

“Your visibility is only as good as your worst window,” Kelsie Fraser, a spokesperson with the Saskatoon Police Service, told CTV News.

Not clearing your vehicle properly can result in a $125 fine. Driving with a snow-covered licence plate carries a $150 ticket, while obstructed mirrors can cost $115.

“If you have time to start your vehicle and let it warm up, you have time to clear it,” Fraser said.

The reminder comes after approximately seven centimetres of snow fell in Saskatoon on Monday, according to Environment Canada.

Sidewalks must also be cleared. Saskatoon property owners are required to remove snow from the public walkway surrounding their home within 48 hours of a snowfall.

The city investigates complaints, and repeat violations could lead to fines or snow removal costs being added to a property tax bill.
