Support continues to grow for a Prince Albert family grieving the loss of 23-year-old Canadian Armed Forces member Shaun Farrell, one of four soldiers killed in a fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday. Premier Scott Moe spoke about Farrell’s death on Tuesday, saying people across Saskatchewan are thinking of the family. “On behalf of the Province of Saskatchewan, my condolences and our prayers. There isn’t a person across this province that isn’t thinking of the Farrell family in Prince Albert today,” Moe told reporters. Moe said he’s been in contact with the Farrell family and that protocols are in place to continue honouring the fallen service member. “It begins with the lowering of the flags, but then carries on, not just through the next number of days and weeks, but carries on through the next number of months and years,” Moe said, noting the province can also honour fallen service members by naming lakes in their memory. At Prince Albert City Hall, community members are also showing their support through a book of condolences. Messages remember Farrell for his courage, dedication and willingness to serve something greater than himself. Heloise Vermeulen, a friend of the Farrell family, has also organized a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral costs and related expenses. Other fundraising campaigns have been circulating online, but Farrell’s mother warned the public in a Facebook post to be cautious of fake donation pages, saying Vermeulen’s GoFundMe page is the only legitimate one. Vermeulen said flowers, cards and donations for the family can be dropped off at Out of Africa Deli and Sweets in Saskatoon.
