A late blast of spring snow has forced a Prince Albert golf course to cancel a long-weekend tournament, just one day after kicking off the season. Snow was no deterrent Friday morning for some avid golfers at Prince Albert’s Cooke Municipal Golf Course heading into the May long weekend. On Thursday, the golf course officially opened and welcomed 100 golfers to play in the beautiful spring air. “Mother Nature was a little bit on our side,” said head professional Ryan Wells. “Better than [Friday], obviously. But yeah no, it kicked off the 2026 season. We were very happy with the turnout. The course wintered fantastically and a lot of great feedback from the guests yesterday.” But by Friday morning, Mother Nature had other plans as the winter weather had returned. While it wasn’t quite the same turnout as day one, a few brave souls showed up for a round. Wells was less than enthusiastic about the weather. “It’s depressing. Winter is over. But no, like I said, it is what it is. You know, you got to stay positive and look ahead.” By Friday afternoon, conditions deteriorated, with snow piling on the ground and the course closing officially around 1 p.m. The spring snow caused Cooke Municipal to pull the plug on the Northern Team Championship this weekend, which had more than 140 registered golfers. As of Friday afternoon, Cooke Municipal said it’s hoping to re-open Sunday at the earliest. This is a late start compared to the past few years when it was able to open in April.
