RCMP continue searching for two suspects after deadly shooting on Sask. First Nation

We’re learning more about a fatal shooting and manhunt on a Saskatchewan First Nation Tuesday. Stacey Hein has more.

RCMP are still searching for two suspects following a deadly shooting on Big Island Lake Cree Nation, police said Wednesday.

The community, about 100 kilometres northwest of Meadow Lake, was placed under lockdown for nearly eight hours Tuesday before a dangerous persons alert was lifted later that afternoon.

Police say a 31-year-old man was killed and three others were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Larry Wahpistikwan confirmed his son, Neil Wahpistikwan, was the man who died.

RCMP say the investigation is in its early stages and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

“It’s extremely important for the public to provide any information that they might have to help us determine the direction the investigation is going and identify those suspects,” Insp. Ashley St. Germain of the Saskatchewan RCMP told reporters Tuesday.

Big Island Lake Cree Nation Chief David Sandfly also urges anyone with information to contact police.

“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this tragedy in our community,” Sandfly said in an RCMP news release. “Keeping Big Island Lake Cree Nation safe takes all of us working together. When you share what you know with police, you help keep our community safe.”

RCMP say the motive for the shooting is still under investigation, and officers remain in the community.
