Yorkton approves 2026 budget, prioritizes roads and water infrastructure

Council passed the 2026 budget with a 3.85% increase, raising average household costs by about $7.60 per month

Yorkton City Council has approved its 2026 budget back in January, introducing a 3.85 per cent tax increase aimed at maintaining core services and investing in infrastructure.

“This year’s budget is bringing it back to basics,” said Ashley Stradeski, the city’s director of finance. “We’re focusing on roads, sidewalks, snow removal, and underground infrastructure like pipes. None of it’s flashy, but it’s essential.”

Of the increase, 2.75 per cent is allocated to the operating budget, while 1.1 per cent goes toward the capital budget. Stradeski said the average household will see an extra $7.60 per month.

Much of the capital budget is earmarked for less visible projects, including over $9 million for the north transmission main, which will improve water system redundancy.

“It’s not exciting, but it helps avoid major disruptions like the one Calgary experienced,” he said.

The proposed budget, presented to Council on Jan. 7, drew 12 public submissions. Feedback primarily focused on the city’s transit system, which will continue to operate on reduced hours for Saturdays and mornings, and a planned investment in gym equipment.

The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce criticized the $25,000 allocation for gym equipment at the City Operations Centre, arguing the money would be better spent on community projects.

Stradeski defended the decision, saying employee wellness is a priority.

“Providing equipment is more cost-effective than memberships. With contributions from CUPE and the city, it’s a one-time investment that benefits staff,” he explained.

The budget does not increase city reserves.

“We’re putting the money directly into infrastructure. Roads, sidewalks, clean water — this is what citizens rely on,” Stradeski said. “This year we’ll do more, and next year even more.”
