Whitehawk trial continues with friends of Keenan Toto sharing events of early morning shooting

A Regina jury reviewed video, phone calls, and witness testimony on Day 3 of Dillon Whitehawk's murder retrial. Mick Favel reports.

The trial of Dillon Whitehawk continued at the Court of King’s Bench on Wednesday as the jury learned the details surrounding the death of Keenan Toto.

In the early morning of Dec. 1, 2019, Toto was killed by a gunshot on the 1200 block of Queen Street.

A witness, who cannot be named due to a publication ban, said they invited Toto to a small gathering on Dewdney Avenue that evening.

At 3:00 am, the witness said the two decided to walk to a convenience store located on Pasqua Street for some snacks.

While walking on the 1200 block of Queen Street, a red Buick Enclave pulled up beside them.

Toto approached the SUV and seconds later was shot by someone in vehicle. Toto fell to the ground while the vehicle drove away.

A camera located at a home recorded the shooting and of the vehicle leaving.

Two people who lived on the street testified hearing the gunshot and calling 911. These emergency calls were played in court for the jury to hear.

A close friend of Toto was emotional as he testified. The two were together at the Dewdney Avenue gathering. At the time, there were now hints danger would be so close.

The day ended with testimony from the owner of the Buick Enclave used in the shooting.

According to the witness, they had lent the car to an acquaintance who was associated with Whitehawk.

The witness said they had to report the car missing because the person was not replying back.

Through messages shown in court, the witness and Whitehawk did communicate briefly around the time the shooting happened, but the witness claimed to not be with the vehicle or the driver.

Two members of Regina Police Service members also testified. It was determined Toto was shot through the side of the shoulder.

The trial will continue Thursday morning.
