Distillers and brewers in Saskatchewan are voicing their support for a 50 per cent tariff on alcohol imported from the United States, calling it encouraging news. “Saskatchewan makes some of the highest quality alcohols from Saskatchewan grains and I think this new tariff will really encourage people to choose local products when they are shopping for their next spirit,” Last Mountain Distillery CEO Meredith Smidt said in an update from the province on Tuesday. “We look forward to sharing more of the high-quality Saskatchewan products we make with people as they seek alternatives to American made spirits.” Last week, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced a 50 per cent tariff on American liquor in response to the 50 per cent tariff on Canadian alcohol the U.S. imposed on Aug. 22. The 50 per cent levy, which will apply to alcohol from the United States imported into Saskatchewan, will come into effect Sept. 8. “No one wins from a trade war, and ultimately, we all want to return to free and fair trade. But when Canadian businesses and the public are being asked to weather the consequences of tariffs, it is equally important that we stand behind the businesses, farmers and manufacturers producing exceptional products here at home,” Black Fox Farm & Distillery said in a statement. Following Moe’s announcement, some Saskatchewan shoppers began turning to Canadian alcohol, with liquor store employees telling CTV News they’re seeing more customers inquiring as to where their products are made. The province says it has no intention of removing American liquor from store shelves and are adamant on letting consumers decide whether they still want to purchase those products. “I like the fact that our Premier and the Saskatchewan government are leaving it up to the consumer to make the decision and the government’s not making it for them,” Sherwood Co-op CEO Troy Verboom said in the province’s update. “It is going to drive those prices up on the retail shelf and the consumer can once again make the decision.” With files from Wayne Mantyka
