The University of Regina Rams have kicked off their 2026 season with a decisive 39-8 victory over the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Running back Christian Katenaude and kicker Ty Gorniak came through with breakout performances. Katenaude rushed for 130 years while Gorniak set a U of R record, completing six of six field goals from 30 to 42 yards out. The Rams were unopposed in the first three quarters, with the scoreboard reading 32-0 by the start of the fourth. Both Nicholas Sirleaf and Renzel Arinaza were credited with touchdowns off passes from quarterback Owen Sieben. The Golden Bears broke through with their lone touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. “Overall, it was a good Canada West win for our group,” head coach Mark McConkey said in a statement. “I thought our defence played outstanding in the first half especially. We’ve got some room for improvement on both sides, but I was really impressed by the way Katenaude and the offensive line group got the job done up front. We established that run game and really leaned on it the rest of the way.” Overall, the Rams recorded 202 rushing yards compared with Alberta’s 77. Regina’s home opener against Manitoba is for Friday, Sept. 11.
