Poisonous plant found in RM of Victory

The RM of Victory has issued a public safety notice after finding a poisonous plant along Lake Diefenbaker.

According to a social media post, black henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) has been identified along the shores and extending into the grasslands around the lake in the RM.

The highly poisonous plant poses a major risk to people, livestock, pets and wildlife. All parts of the plant contain toxic compounds, including its leaves, flowers, stems, seeds and roots.

The notice warned people not to touch the plant with bare hands. Should someone be required to handle it, they are advised to wear gloves, long sleeves, long pants and eye protection. They are also encouraged to avoid inhaling dust from dead plants or seeds.

Burning or smoking the plant may also pose a hazard.

Additionally, the post warned residents to keep livestock and pets away from infested areas and to supervise children and teach them to never pick or eat unknown plants.

Signs of poisoning in people include:

• Dry mouth and difficulty swallowing

• Dilated pupils and blurred vision

• Rapid heartbeat

• Flushed, hot, dry skin

• Confusion, agitation, hallucinations, or delirium

• Severe cases may lead to seizures, coma, or death

Signs of poisoning in animals include

• Excessive thirst

• Dilated pupils

• Rapid heartbeat

• Staggering or weakness

• Tremors or excitement

• Difficulty breathing

• Collapse or death in severe cases

If residents suspect any person or animal to have ingested black henbane, they are urged to seek medical or veterinary help immediately.
