Kawacatoose Boys Group and Dance Troupe spread love and healing among Regina residents

On Valentine’s Day, Regina community members gathered at the northwest YMCA for the Kawacatoose Boys Group and Dance Troupe.

Though six members put on the performance, about 25-30 of the family members sing, spreading their love for music.

“It was a way to come together, to heal together as a family,” said Phyllis Littletent, the emcee and one of the singers. “We travel all over, performing and sharing culture and sharing a little of who we are as Indigenous people, but also healing as a family.”

The group was formed by Littletent’s father about 20 years ago.

“The singing is a part of who we are. There’s drumming, there’s singing, there’s dancing. When we all sing, we get together, we sing, and we harmonize together. It’s very healing for all of us. All of the songs that we sing, it goes straight up to the creator, and the creator blesses us in a good way.”

Though Regina is in the middle of Frost season, it’s a good time for the group to show off their talent.

“It’s allowing us Indigenous people to go out there and share cultures and share healing with one another. It goes back to the teachings of our elders to try to love one another and share with one another.”

The performance on Saturday was an hour in length, with six songs performed. Each song has a backstory, but Littletent said the songs sung are all up to the “men in the middle”.
