A 44-yard field goal with 25 seconds on the clock from Ty Gorniak helped lift the University of Regina Rams to a 22-20 win over the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday in Edmonton. It’s the first time in program history that the Rams have held a 6-1 record in a season when they’re hosting the Vanier Cup at Mosaic Stadium and clinched a home playoff game. Running back Marshall Erichsen’s two touchdown performance etched his name in the school record books, surpassing Neal Hughes (2003) and Adrian Charles (2010) for most rushing touchdowns in a season with 11 (and counting). The previous mark was nine. The third year back now has 938 yards on the season which moves him into a tie for third most in school history with Atlee Simon (2015). The Rams entered the second half with a 16-6 lead over the Golden Bears thanks in part to a pair of rushing majors by Erichsen. The Rams opened the second half with a 32-yard Gorniak field goal. Alberta replied with consecutive touchdowns by Chevy Thomas and Seth Poelzer. Rams quarterback Owen Sieben engineered a drive in the final minutes to set up the Gorniak game winner. The Rams have now clinched a home playoff game after their win and a University of Saskatchewan win over the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday. Nicholas Sirleaf had six catches for 103 yards on Saturday. Sirleaf now has 655 receiving yards which is the most by a U of R receiver since 2018 when Ryan Shienbein amassed 712. The Rams will close out their Canada West schedule on Friday afternoon at Leibel Field when they face the UBC Thunderbirds. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
