Dillon Whitehawk trial continues with first full day of testimony

During the first full day of testimony in the retrial of Dillon Whitehawk, court heard from witnesses, including police. Mick Favel reports.

The trial of Dillon Whitehawk continued Tuesday with the first full day of testimony detailing the fatal shooting of Jordan Denton.

On Nov. 9, 2019, Denton was shot and killed on the 800 block of Robinson Street.

The first to testify was a former member of the Regina Police Service (RPS) major crimes unit.

Through video surveillance gathered in the area of the shooting, Denton was seen walking through the neighborhood alone at around 2:00 a.m.

Three other witnesses described seeing Denton within one hour of his death.

The person who discovered Denton near her back doorstep testified. She said she was walking home with her then-partner when she heard a gunshot.

They both hid in a dark area before heading to her home, where Denton was discovered on the ground and still alive.

The witness said she tried to revive him but was unsuccessful in saving him.

A cousin of Denton also testified. He said Denton was at his home shortly before the shooting. At the time, Denton was calm when he left the home.

The third witness testified saying he was with Denton at or around the time of the shooting.

According to the witness, they used methamphetamine together and went for a walk.

Denton was walking ahead of the witness, when he suddenly began holding his back and told them to call an ambulance.

The witness said he left to call for help, later returning to the scene to see Denton being resuscitated.

A member of the RPS forensic identification unit ended the day of testimony.

Details of the crime scene where Denton died were shared, which included the discovery of the gunshot wound in Denton’s back.

The trial will continue Wednesday, as the court makes its way through the remaining testimony of the around 30 witnesses.

Whitehawk faces two counts of first-degree murder for his alleged role in the deaths of Denton and Keenan Toto.

Toto was shot and killed on Dec. 1, 2019.
