Court hears from witness who placed Whitehawk at scene of both drive-by shootings

Court heard from a witness claiming to have seen Dillon Whitehawk at the scene of both drive-by shootings in 2019. Mick Favel reports.

The double murder retrial of Dillon Whitehawk continued in Regina on Thursday as a witness testified placing Whitehawk at the scene of both drive-by shootings in 2019.

The witness, who cannot be named due to a publication ban shared under oath, was the driver in both drive-by shootings which killed Jordan Denton and Keenan Toto.

The witness said at the time, they and Whitehawk were a part of the Indian Mafia (I.M.) street gang.

In the early hours of Nov. 9, the witness, Whitehawk, and two other I.M. gang members were driving around, according to Thursday’s witness.

The car pulled up to two people on the 900 block of Robinson Street. After a confrontation, the pair turned and ran away.

From the back seat of a two-door car, Whitehawk pushed the front seat forward and opened fire, hitting Denton in the back, the witness said.

The witness also described the early morning of Dec. 1. They were with Whitehawk in a red Buick Enclave, accompanied with two other gang members.

According to the witness, they approached two people walking down the block of 1200 Queen Street.

Through the passenger window, Whitehawk asked the pair if they were gang affiliated.

There was no answer from the two people, and Whitehawk opened fire. The car then left the scene.

Both cars and guns used in the crimes were later dumped.

The witness described Whitehawk as looking to intentionally kill someone as it could help him rise within the gang. They added that Denton and Toto were not known to Whitehawk.

The witness has not been charged in relation to the murders.

Dr. Andreea Nistor is the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsies for both victims. She concluded both had died from complications from the gunshots.

RCMP forensic specialist Megan Groot also testified. She shared her analysis on a gun used in one of the murders, declaring it a prohibited firearm.

Whitehawk is facing two first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Toto and Denton.

Witness testimony will continue Friday.
