Crown stays charges against ‘Queen of Canada’ Romana Didulo

Romana Didulo, leader of the “Kingdom of Canada,” will not face charges after the Crown stays her court case. Sierra D’Souza Butts reports.

The self-proclaimed “Queen of Canada” Romana Didulo’s charges have been stayed by the Crown, CTV News confirms.

Didulo was set to make an appearance in Swift Current Provincial Court on Wednesday.

CTV News received the written request for the stay of proceedings Wednesday afternoon. The documents confirmed Didulo’s charges, consisting of one count of failing to comply with undertaking conditions and one count of intimidating a justice system participant, were stayed by the Crown.

A preliminary inquiry was set to begin in April, prior to the stay of proceedings.

Didulo, the leader of the “Kingdom of Canada” fringe group, occupied a decommissioned school in the village of Richmound, Sask., prior to the RCMP executing a search warrant there on Sept. 3, 2025, that saw 16 people taken into custody.

Most of those arrested were later released.

A judge granted Didulo’s release on conditions a few days later, on Sept. 8, and she has made several court appearances on the charges since.

RCMP reported at the time that 13 imitation, semi-automatic handguns, along with ammunition and electronic devices, were seized during the search of the group’s compound.

Shortly after the arrests, provincial health officials declared parts of the compound unfit for human habitation and prohibited anyone from living there.

Speaking to reporters following the announcement of the 2026-27 budget, Minister of Justice and Attorney General Tim McLeod said the decision was made after the Didulo’s case was re-evaluated by the public prosecutions office.

“We don’t pursue charges unless there is a reasonable likelihood of conviction,” he explained. “Any case before the court is constantly being reassessed by our prosecutors and if they came to that conclusion, we certainly trust their judgment.”

Prior to taking up residence in Richmound, Didulo and her followers were forced out of Kamsack, Sask., on Sept. 13, 2023.

Didulo rose to prominence in the wave of alt subcultures that emerged during the protests against the public health measures employed in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents in Richmound breathed a sigh of relief after Didulo’s arrest, citing the anxiety and uneasiness the group created while they resided in the community.

Richmound is located approximately 400 kilometres west of Regina, near the Alberta border.
