Alberta man faces human trafficking charges following multi-agency investigation

A Calgary man faces human trafficking charges after a six-month investigation involving Regina police. Connor Chan reports.

An Alberta man is facing several charges following a human trafficking investigation led by Regina police.

The investigation started in December of last year when investigators with the Regina Police Service (RPS) received information about a woman being trafficked in the sex trade, according to an update from RPS on Wednesday.

Investigation found the woman had been trafficked through western Canada, including Regina, between December 2023 and November 2025, police said.

RPS Vice Unit investigators, along with the Calgary Police Service (CPS) and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) Human Trafficking Enforcement Unit worked to investigate, locate, and arrest the suspect.

A 28-year-old man from Calgary, Alta. was arrested on May 20. He was charged with human trafficking, material benefit resulting from trafficking, procuring, material benefit from sexual services, advertising sexual services, possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, money laundering, and failure to comply.

He was scheduled to appear in Regina Provincial Court on Wednesday morning.

The charges were laid as part of a complex, multi-agency investigation called ‘Project Anchor,’ police said. Over 30 officers with the two Alberta agencies were involved in the arrest and search of four residences, one business, and a vehicle, all located in Calgary, Alta.

RPS said the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada, as well as multiple RPS investigative units and civilian professionals, also contributed to the investigation.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, RPS Deputy Chief Laurel Marshal said human trafficking cases rarely see just one victim.

“We believe there are several victims out there. So, holding someone accountable gives somebody an avenue to maybe now reach out to police and we encourage them to reach out to their local police agency,” she said.

Marshal explained human trafficking can be complex because it can be transient and mobile, crossing provincial and city boundaries.

“It can be very layered. The investigations are complicated and involve a lot of collaboration amongst different police agencies and other financial agencies in order to investigate them,” she said.

“It’s the investigators doing proactive work reaching out to victims and giving them an avenue where they can report to police.”
