The province’s police watchdog is investigating after two people died in a crash following an attempted traffic stop north of Kingston. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says an Ontario Provincial Police officer approached a man in a parked vehicle after receiving a call about a suspicious car in South Frontenac Township shortly after midnight on Monday. The vehicle was later found to have been stolen, the SIU says. The driver fled the area and was involved in a single-vehicle collision a short time later on Bedford Road near Salmon Lake Road, the SIU says. The male driver and a woman in the car were found dead at the scene. OPP say officers found the pair in a wooded area. The individuals have not been identified. The SIU is the independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in a death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. Three investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist have been assigned to investigate the circumstances of the crash. OPP say Bedford Road in South Frontenac remains closed between Mason Lane and Lady Bush Lane, as the investigation continues.
