Atlético Ottawa head coach Diego Mejía leaving team at the end of the month

Atlético Ottawa announced that the team will be saying farewell to their head coach, Diego Mejía, at the end of the month.

According to a news release from Atlético Ottawa, Mejía will be coaching one last match at TD Place in Ottawa, where the team won its first ever North Star Cup in 2025, this Sunday.

Mejía’s final match with the team will be next Saturday against Pacific FC in Langford, B.C.

“I came to Ottawa looking for an opportunity to do something special. I leave knowing that we created a moment that will never be forgotten,” said Diego Mejía, head coach of Atlético Ottawa, said in a statement.

“Our North Star Cup victory was the outcome of a process where we established Atlético as the best team in Canada, playing the best football the Canadian Premier League has ever seen, and we earned our place in the Concacaf Champions Cup.”

Mejía joined the team in January 2025. While the details have not yet been announced, Atlético Ottawa say the head coach is leaving to “pursue an exciting professional opportunity.”

“We see this as an amazing moment for Atlético Ottawa,” said Manuel Vega, CEO of Atlético Ottawa said in a statement.

“When we brought Diego into the club, it was part of a wider plan to build a structure that empowers professionals to develop on and off the pitch. Diego has earned the opportunity to take this next step in his career and shows the value of Atlético Ottawa in our associated global network.

The organization says they have already began searching for potential replacements, and in the meantime, assistant coach Diego Campos will take over as interim head coach.
