Santa Claus came to town early this year, with a message that the South Porcupine Food Bank in Timmins is in need of donations.
To help rally the community, the Whitney Volunteer Fire Station sprung up to help.

The station’s chief, Bill McCord, said the giving spirit seems to be stronger this year.
“Last year, we had close to 2,000 pounds and I believe we’ll get over 2,500 pounds this year,” he said.
“The other thing that I’m noticing, people this year are really generous with the money donations. It’s been unbelievable.”
McCord said the event is on track to surpass last year’s more than $800 cash total.
The food drive is an over-35-year-old community tradition, with fire truck sirens and Christmas music ringing through the streets.

In return for donations, donors get a visit from Santa himself and some candy canes from his helpers.
“The kids get to have that last talk with Santa and their last wish before Christmas comes next week,” said McCord.
“It’s good to see the cheer on their faces and the joy. (To) give back to the community for their generous donations to us.”
