Man dies after being shot during Montreal police intervention

Quebec’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died in an officer-involved shooting in Montreal’s Ville-Marie borough Saturday night.

According to the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), the Montreal police service (SPVM) received a 911 call shortly after 9 p.m. about a person in possession of a firearm in an apartment building.

Officers arrived on scene at 9:04 p.m. and made contact with the person.

“The police then fired in the direction of the person, who was wounded by police fire,” the BEI said.

Police provided first aid before paramedics arrived. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Montreal police and BEI vehicles were still at the scene of the shooting near the corner of St-Hubert and Ontario streets Sunday morning.

The BEI investigates all cases in which someone dies, suffers a serious injury, or is injured by police gunfire during a police intervention or while in police custody.

Six BEI investigators are in charge of investigating the circumstances of the police intervention on Saturday. No further information was released.
