The Northern Tornadoes Project said Monday that it has completed surveys in Mattawa and the Huntsville areas following storms that moved through these areas on May 18.

They have now confirmed that four separate EF0 downbursts occurred, with one of them in the Mattawa area.

“The first downburst hit Mattawa at approximately 8 p.m. with estimated maximum wind speeds of 115 km/h,” the project said in a news release May 25.

“Tree and building damage occurred over an area at least eight km long and up to six km wide. One injury was also reported.”

The next downburst was a smaller microburst that hit near Huntsville at approximately 8:45 p.m. with estimated maximum wind speeds of 115 km/h.

Isolated tree damage occurred over an area approximately 2.2 km long and up to 0.3 km wide.

Five minutes later, near Baysville, another microburst occurred with maximum estimated wind speeds of 115 km/h.

Once again, isolated tree damage was found over a small area of approximately 0.5 km long and up to 0.3 km wide.

The final downburst of the day impacted the Lake of Two Rivers area at approximately 9:20 p.m. Isolated damage has been found and there were four injuries reported at local campgrounds.

“This downburst has been given a preliminary rating of EF0 and further investigation is pending to finalize the estimated maximum wind speed and total area impacted,” the release said.
