A small group of polar bears was caught on camera last week in Peawanuck First Nation, not an uncommon sight for the community in Ontario’s Far North. “Part of community safety is being aware that we share our world with wildlife,” said a social media post by the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service this week. “Some wildlife come in large sizes and can be dangerous even while looking adorable.” The photos were taken late last week by Const. Tina Stephen, who was working in Peawanuck. “The polar bear sightings serve as a good reminder to pay close attention to your surroundings when outdoors,” the post said. NAPS spokesperson Scott Paradis said in an email that Stephen was in the community as part of her rotation. “I’m not a polar bear expert, but they are very common in our two most northern detachments – Peawanuck First Nation and Fort Severn First Nation,” Paradis said. “I don’t know much about their migration patterns, but I do believe regular sightings do occur by this time in autumn and throughout the winter.”
