The first long weekend of the summer has arrived and Ontario Provincial Police in Dryden and area will be out on the roads from June 26 to July 5 with what they call a ‘comprehensive enforcement campaign.’ “The long weekend is historically one of the busiest travel periods of the year, with significantly increased traffic along Highway 17, the city of Dryden, the Township of Ignace, and surrounding areas,” police said in a news release June 25. “OPP anticipate elevated risk factors including impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving, and failure to wear seatbelts.” Officers will conduct a combination of high-visibility patrols, traffic stops, and RIDE programs concentrated along Highway 17, arterial roadways, and known high-collision locations. “Police will be utilizing automated licence plate recognition technology as well to assist in identifying violations such as suspended drivers, unlicensed drivers, expired vehicle permits, and stolen vehicles,” police said.
