Timmins — Some residents in Timmins woke up to a cheery sight this afternoon.
The Whitney Fire Department ventured out for their annual Candy Cane Run with fire department vehicles.
Accompanied by Santa Claus and a flock of volunteers, together they distributed candy canes to local residents and collected donations for the South Porcupine Food Bank.
It's a tradition the fire department has celebrated for over 30 years and is something fire officials say never fails to put a smile on people's faces.
"Everybody looks forward to it every year because… we did some history research and back in 1970, that we could find out from the pictures, it first started with a snow machine and a sleigh with Santa Claus and we were giving out candy. Next thing you know, it turned into an awesome food drive," said Brian Nankervis, organizer.
"Everybody gets involved. Students from the school doing community hours… firefighters… parents… some companies will donate their employee's time, so they can have the day off to do the candy run," he continued.
Nankervis says the run usually raises $2,000 to $3,000 in cash donations accompanied by about three or four truckloads of food.
