As Montreal prepares for another winter, some bike paths are set to hibernate. On Nov. 16, five stretches in the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville will close. Bike paths on sections of Parc Avenue, Meilleur Street, Port-Royal Street West, Legendre Street West and Tolhurst Street will be affected. While some cyclists say it’s a pity, borough mayor Maude Théroux-Séguin says the seasonal closure has several pros. For one, the move will save Ahuntsic-Cartierville more than $140,000 in snow removal contracts. “It’s really like a conjugating of, of, of all factors,” Theroux-Seguin says. “With the industrial district, with also residents living in the area when you have, like, a snow removal operation, parking could be difficult,” she explains. With the move set to open an additional 265 parking spaces, some drivers say it’s a relief. “We’re just trying to make a compromise in that area, specifically where there was a huge, let’s say, uproar for a lot of people when this was installed by the previous administration,” the borough mayor tells CTV. The city plans to reopen said bike paths on April 1.
