Quebec police handed out more than 50 tickets and arrested three people for operating a vessel while impaired during a weekend-long crackdown on the province’s waterways. Several Quebec police forces, including the Montreal police (SPVM), checked over 600 watercraft during more than 100 interventions carried out on Aug. 1 and 2 as part of a coordinated boating safety operation. Officers were looking for boaters taking part in behaviour that could endanger their own safety and that of other water users, including: Police also noted that weather conditions complicated boating on Aug. 2, with heavy rain and thunderstorm risks affecting several regions of the province. They said it’s a important reminder to check the forecast before heading out and adjusting plans accordingly. Authorities say they will continue to raise awareness among boaters to make Quebec’s waterways safer for everyone.
