Labour Day 2026: What’s open and closed in Montreal

Many businesses and city services will be closed Monday, Sept. 7 for Labour Day.

Under Quebec law, retail stores and larger food establishments are required to close. Here’s what to know before you head out.

Closed

• Large grocery stores (over 375 square metres of sales area) and shopping malls
• Banks
• Canada Post
• Government services, including permit counters, Accès Montréal offices, and municipal courts and offices
• SQDC
• Most SAQ locations (SAQ Express stores remain open)
• Indoor pools, libraries, and community centres (or reduced hours — check listings here)
• City ecocentres, on the usual summer schedule
• Municipal courtrooms, except room R.40 at 775 Gosford St., which handles arraignments for people in custody
• City service counters at 775 Gosford St., 7275 Sherbrooke St. E. (Place Versailles), and 1405 de l’Église St. in Saint-Laurent

Open

• Convenience stores and small grocery stores
• Many pharmacies
• Museums
• Public markets, including Jean-Talon and Atwater
• Biodôme, Biosphère, Botanical Garden, Insectarium and Planetarium. Online tickets recommended
• Public transit is on a reduced schedule. Check the Chrono app

Running as usual

• Garbage, recycling, compost and other curbside collections normally scheduled for Mondays will go ahead as planned in all boroughs. Check Info-collectes or call 311 for details.
• The city’s online services remain accessible, and requests submitted during the holiday will be accepted, though not processed until Sept. 8.

A few reminders

• Parking restrictions remain in effect.
• The closure rule isn’t limited to food stores and applies to retail businesses, generally. The law doesn’t apply to service businesses such as hair salons, or to offices, performance venues or manufacturers.
• A small number of businesses can remain open, including bookstores, antique dealers and florists, along with businesses in designated tourist zones.
• Anyone planning to visit a sports or cultural facility should check with the specific location beforehand, as hours vary by borough. Loisirs Montréal has programming details.
• Library and Maison de la culture hours also vary — check with your local branch.
