Sarnia integrity commissioner clears councillor over Indigenous mural social media posts

Sarnia’s integrity commissioner has found Coun. Bill Dennis did not violate the city’s code of conduct over controversial social media posts about a newly installed Indigenous mural at city hall.

Dennis made several comments online about the mural, including one post that said, “Put that in your pipes and smoke it.”

In a report, the integrity commissioner described Dennis’ remarks as “political speech” that warranted a political response, but concluded they did not amount to a breach of the city’s code of conduct.

The finding means no sanctions will be imposed against the councillor in relation to the posts.
