OPP in the West Region laid more than 2,100 charges during this year’s Labour Day long weekend traffic campaign, with speeding accounting for nearly half of all offences. Police say officers conducted 2,330 traffic stops between Sept. 4 and Sept. 7, resulting in 2,142 charges, up from 1,601 charges laid during the same campaign in 2025. The annual enforcement and education initiative focused on the “Big Four” risky driving behaviours: aggressive driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving and impaired driving. Speeding violations led the list of offences, with officers laying 1,004 charges compared with 814 during last year’s campaign. Police also laid 37 stunt driving charges, up from 27 in 2025, while seatbelt-related offences increased to 172 from 123. Officers issued 11 distracted driving charges, more than double the five laid during the previous Labour Day campaign.
