London Health Sciences Centre has attracted a world-renowned clinician to head its Children’s Health Research Institute (CHRI). Dr. Susa Benseler comes with a highly respected pedigree, and a philosophy of bringing research and care together. “I think this is where the opportunity lies because literally all diseases have their origins in childhood,” said Dr. Benseler. LHSC has named her as the new Scientific Director of the CHRI. With a background as a paediatrician caring for children with rare inflammatory diseases, she became a researcher from questions arising through patient care. “So, all of us clinical researchers I think are grounding our work in caring for children and families. That’s where we put all our strengths. That’s where we pull our inspiration. I’m just like everybody else. You know I see children in clinics, and I see children in emergency departments, and I learn what matters to them and how we can make their lives better,” she explained. In an environment where every research dollar matters, she understands the need for relationships. “If you establish effective partnerships, partnerships that really can move the needle, you will get the funding,” she said. Dr. Benseler has held roles with SickKids, Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, and, most recently, with Children’s Health Ireland. She has nothing but praise for the Canadian health care system. “It’s an approach where we can all thrive, and most importantly where we rally around children and families. I don’t think I’ve worked in a better place than the Canadian health care system.”
